The Difference Between Nice and Kind Kids
It’s just so often that we tell our kids to “be nice”. This is a part of our strategy on how to raise good kids. But what does it mean for them to be nice? And should we be telling them something else instead?
When kids are told to be nice, they usually tend to become quiet and withdraw into themselves. They become more tolerant and accommodating, even when other kids or adults, as well, don’t treat them nicely themselves. It all points to keeping peace and convenience in the environment all at the expense of a child’s assertiveness and unique personality.
We are teaching kids to be submissive and crush their feelings in order to give others the comfort and ease that they think they are entitled to. But what about your child? This is what you don’t want to be teaching them.
Instead, teach them to be kind without sacrificing their own selves. Let them build their own personalities while instilling empathy in them. This lets them understand and share the feelings of others, thereby helping them know the right thing to do in any situation they are in.
And how to raise teens, especially young children, to empathize and be kind? Here are some ways.
- Talk to your children with kindness. This will teach your child that this value is important and expected in the family. A simple “that was a kind thing to do” will bring a lot of positive effects to your child.
- Be a good role model and practice kindness everywhere. When your children see how kindness is done, they will easily follow your footsteps and grow to be kind people.
- Treat your children with kindness. This is, by far, the most effective method of instilling kindness and empathy in children. When they experience it themselves, they will surely do it to others.
Being nice is okay, but being kind is better. And this is what you should be teaching your children right from the start.
